Levels of transcription explained
Different transcription styles capture speech at different levels of detail. Below is a clear explanation of each option to help you choose the right level for your project.

True Verbatim Transcription
True verbatim (also known as strict or full verbatim) captures an audio recording exactly as it was spoken, including every word, sound, and relevant non-verbal cue.
What’s captured:
All spoken words, including grammatical errors and slang
Filler words (“um”, “uh”, “like”, “you know”)
False starts, repetitions, and stutters
Non-verbal sounds (coughing, laughter, sighs)
Pauses, silences, and background noise
Speaker actions where relevant
Best for
Legal proceedings, depositions, police interviews, qualitative research, and psychological studies.
Clean (Intelligent) Verbatim Transcription
Clean verbatim provides a word for word transcript while removing non-essential elements to improve clarity and readability, without changing the original meaning.
What’s modified or omitted
Filler words are removed
Stutters and unnecessary repetitions are omitted
False starts and self-corrections are smoothed out
Non-verbal sounds and excessive background noise are excluded
Best for
Interviews, meetings, business communications, journalism, lectures, podcasts, and general transcription needs.

Jefferson (Jeffersonian) Transcription
What it captures
Jefferson transcription is a specialised system used in conversation analysis to document not only what is said, but exactly how it is said. It captures the fine detail of human interaction.
Timing (precise pauses and overlapping speech)
Intonation (pitch, emphasis, and volume)
Delivery (laughter, stretched sounds, speed, emotion)
Best for
Primarily used in academic research, sociology, and linguistics. Jefferson transcription reveals interactional and social cues not shown in standard transcripts. Due to its complexity, it can take up to six times longer to produce than a clean transcription.
